McCARDLE RUSTIC FURNITURE

Welcome to McCardle Rustic Furniture.

History:

McCardle Rustic Furniture began in 1991 by William McCardle of Tyler, Texas.  Inspired by Roy Underhill's television program, The Woodwright's Shop, and Mr. Underhill's books on traditional furniture design William embarked on a journey of understanding.  Through the years William has built timeless, beautiful, ergonomically functional, strong, heirloom quality individual rustic pieces.

A retired Captain from the Phoenix Fire Department, he moved to Tyler where a large variety of native species of wood are available.  William harvests much of the Oak, Elm, Cherry, Sweet gum, and Juniper used in his one of a kind creations from his 17 acre forest that surrounds his Tyler home.  Over the years his passion has driven him to improve his techniques and artistic style.  Not only does he refine unique construction techniques, William designs, builds, and modifies tools necessary to make fine rustic furniture.

Daniel Mack, author and designer-maker of rustic furniture featured William McCardle's works in the The Rustic Furniture Companion: Traditions, Techniques, Inspiration, Daniel Mack, Publisher: Lark Books, 1996.  William McCardle's furniture pieces are crafted one at a time.  A true artist, he signs each piece and applies only the best finishes for the wood variety.  From time to time early specimens show up on the open market and are traded for more than the original price.

In 1995 William McCardle wrote:

"I retired ten years ago from 25 years on the Phoenix, Arizona Fire Department.  During my fire department days, I built and remodeled houses.  I moved to Tyler, Texas eight years ago with my wife.  I have been involved full time with wood crafts and rustic furniture  making since moving here.  I have a 2500 square foot shop.  I work alone and I do all the phases of the furniture making, from gathering the trees, peeling,, bending, drying, design, and assembly.  I have invented, designed, and built many of the tools I use.  These include a tenon cutters, a bark stripper, a bending apparatus, and a rocking chair seat carver." William E. McCardle The Rustic Furniture Companion: Traditions, Techniques, Inspiration, Daniel Mack, Publisher: Lark Books, 1996

In 2005, William returned to his roots in Arizona where he built a second workshop in The White Mountains.  The Apache National Forest with its tall, graceful, and glittering Quaking Aspen groves provide him with the opportunity to study and form rockers and tables from this beautiful wood.  Balancing strength and elegance, he has designed some of the most stunning Aspen furniture produced to date.
